The gambling laws in each state is different and because of this, certain events can happen either without permits or not at all. Here’s a short lowdown on a few of them and what you’ll need to do, if you are to throw an event.
New York
Perhaps the easiest place to run a charity casino game. New York doesn’t require you to have anything outside of the standard event insurance (which would be provided by your casino entertainment company as well as your event planner). The only other rule is there can not be any cash prize. A donated prize can be given. This rules apply to all of New York State, including the 5 boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and the northern portion.
New Jersey
New Jersey requires you to have a permit to run a casino event in their state, and the casino entertainment companies must have licensed New Jersey dealers. Without either of these would constitute a fine. The casino entertainment company you’re working with should be able to give you information and the proper link to the New Jersey Game of Chance Control Commission’s website with the permits you’ll need to have filled out before your event.
Connecticut
All games of chance in Connecticut are prohibited. The only thing that may be feasible are private parties where the games are strictly “for fun” only, and where there are no prizes given out. Charity casino nights are also prohibited.
For all other states, please contact your casino entertainment company who will be glad to assist you in any legal issues that need to be rectified before you are able to throw your charity event.
